A Heartfelt Ode to Gwan-sik and Oh Ye-sun from When Life Gives You Tangerines🍊

Some stories don’t just entertain you; they reach deep into your chest and rearrange something you didn’t even realize was broken. When Life Gives You Tangerines did precisely that for me. This isn’t just a review. It’s a love letter to two fictional characters who felt more real than reality.
I recently watched the K-drama, and I haven’t stopped crying since.
Most of the time, I was either bawling or sitting in silence, tears trailing quietly down my cheeks. And in those rare in-between moments, I was smiling, just as happy as Gwan-sik or Oh Ye-sun. Their love made me feel warm. Their pain made me ache. Their parenting, their presence, and their quiet fight for each other reminded me of what real, enduring love actually looks like.
To Gwan-sik and Oh Ye-sun,
This is for you.
You may be fictional characters, but the way you broke me, healed me and broke me all over again is beyond words.
From Someone Who’s Always Believed in Love
I’ve always been a sucker for romance.
Someone who hasn’t been much cherished in real life but who somehow never lost hope. Someone who grew up believing that Veer and Zaara were the couple that could break me and heal me in the same breath. Someone who cried the first time I saw Romeo die for Juliet. I have always believed in love. The quiet kind, the selfless kind, the love that chooses you back.
But then… that belief had started to fade.
But then you came into my life, and though you were fictional characters, you felt too perfect. Before you, the realism of life, of failed expectations and half-lived dreams, made me wonder if the kind of love I once dreamed of was just a lie we tell ourselves.
You not only reminded me that love like that exists but also showed me that it doesn’t have to be perfect to be real. That struggle is a part of love. That family, heartbreak, society — none of it is separate from love.
You didn’t escape life to love each other. You loved each other while living life. And that’s what made you unforgettable.
Gwan-sik didn’t just love Oh Ye-sun when it was easy. You stood by her when your mother and grandmother constantly looked down on her, when they mistreated her when they tried to tear her down. You never let go of her hand. You didn’t raise his voice but raised your entire life for her.
And Oh Ye-sun, oh how you gave your everything up. Your energy, Your time, your strength, your love for studies — you poured it all into lifting Gwan-sik up.
You believed in him when the world doubted him, helped him dream bigger when even he didn’t dare, and stood by his side, not behind him, never behind him.
I understood that you don’t need the world to be with you when you have the right person when Oh Ye-sun looked at Gwan-sik and said,
“The world won’t always be kind to us. But we don’t need their kindness. We just need to stay kind to each other.”
And isn’t that what love is about?
You showed me that real love means not turning on each other when the world does. That success and failure, grief and celebration, are all things to be shared and not faced alone.
You didn’t “complete” each other. You stood beside each other like the strongest kind of pillars; weathered, quiet, unshakable.
You proved something powerful. No matter what life throws at you, if your love is pious and true, you can pick that pain up and turn it into gold. And even if that gold one day perishes, you’ll gather the dust and reframe your story. Together.
You redefined what “forever” means to me.
We have seen many childhood-to-old-age romances in fiction, but few truly took me along their journey. But with you?
I was right there.
I was with you when you ran off to Busan, never letting go of Ye-sun’s hand.
I was there when Ye-sun stood up to Bu and said,
“He’s not less of a man because he’s quiet. He’s stronger because he listens.”
I smiled through my tears when you became the village chief when the community you gave everything to finally saw you for who you were.
I was there in Jeju, walking through those orange groves that held more than fruit. They had history, grief, laughter, and every scar you turned into beauty.
You didn’t just make me feel seen; you made me feel again.
So, Thank you.
Thank you for showing me that daily struggles, small defeats, and tiny joys are all part of love.
Thank you for reminding me that real love isn’t about avoiding pain but choosing each other even when it hurts.
Thank you for motivating one another, lifting each other up in both success and failure, sitting with each other in the storm, and never leaving even when it would’ve been easier to walk away.
Thank you for taking me with you on this journey.
I had lost my trust in surreal love, and you subtly regained my faith. And for that, I’ll always carry you with me.
From a girl you helped believe in love again. 🤍
