Master the Modifiers

Tech Know-How

Talking to AI for the Office and Home

The last blog covered the basics. Now, let’s get fancy with Prompt Modifiers — the tools that fine-tune your AI’s response for any situation, from a board meeting in Mumbai to planning a family trip to Goa.

🧍 Audience & Complexity: Who Are You Talking To?

The AI needs to know your reader’s knowledge level. This changes the vocabulary it uses:

  • Audience: ‘For my CEO’ vs. ‘For a 10-year-old cousin’
  • Complexity: ‘Advanced’ (uses technical jargon) vs. ‘Simple’ (uses easy language)

Example Scenario: Explaining how the UPI app works.

🗣️ Tone & Style: Setting the Vibe

These modifiers ensure the AI sounds right for the moment.

  • Tone: The emotion (e.g., Friendly, Professional, Empathetic).
  • Style: The formality (e.g., Concise, Narrative, Academic).

Office Example: You need a report on quarterly sales.

“Write a professional and persuasive business report. It must be concise and use a tabular format to show the Q3 sales data.”

The ‘concise’ style modifier ensures the AI gives you brief, direct statements with essential information only — perfect for a busy executive!

🎯 Use Case: Customer Service

In a service setting, tone is everything.

  • AI delivering bad news (like a flight delay): You must use Professional, Reassuring, and Empathetic tones. You would never use a Casual tone here!
  • AI as a customer service agent: The role should be a friendly and supportive assistant.

Remember: Detailed prompts lead to relevant output. If you ask for a technical manual, you must request specific code snippets and parameter descriptions! No vagueness allowed!
