Modern Feminism — Inclusive and Diverse

A take on modern feminism and its true meaning.

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

The feminist movement has come a long way since its inception. From the days of bra burning to intersectional feminism, the movement has grown and evolved. And it’s about time we start taking modern feminism seriously. So this “International Women’s Day”, let’s understand what Feminism and modern Feminism mean to women and the world.

Some people might think feminism is outdated, but they couldn’t be more wrong. In today’s world, we need feminism more than ever. However, with issues like the gender pay gap, sexual harassment, and reproductive rights still at the forefront, much work remains to be done.

But let’s be honest for a second: Feminism can be a bit confusing. Feminism is often associated with the fight for gender equality between men and women, but modern-day feminism is much more than that. It recognizes that gender inequality intersects with other forms of oppression and discrimination and that true equality cannot be achieved until all marginalized communities are uplifted. This is why modern feminism is inclusive and diverse: it advocates for the rights of all individuals, regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation, or any other identity.

In the wake of modern feminism, one term that has been around is Intersectional feminism.

American law professor Kimberlé Crenshaw who coined the term in 1989, explained Intersectional Feminism as “a prism for seeing how various forms of inequality often operate together and exacerbate each other,”. She stated that “All inequality is not created equal,”.

What is Intersectional Feminism?

It’s an intersectional approach that shows that people’s social identities can overlap, creating compounding experiences of discrimination. This means the fight for gender equality cannot be separated from the battle for racial justice, LGBTQ+ rights, disability rights, and more. Modern feminism recognizes that individuals face multiple and overlapping forms of discrimination and seeks to address all of them.

One example of Intersectional Feminism is the Black Lives Matter movement, which has brought attention to police brutality and systemic racism against Black individuals. Feminists have been outspoken advocates for the movement because they understand how gender and race intersect in the struggles that Black women and other women of colour encounter.

Modern Feminism Meaning

What exactly do I mean when I say modern feminism is different? First, modern feminism emphasizes inclusivity and diversity within the movement itself. This means amplifying the voices and experiences of women from different backgrounds and identities, including women of colour, transgender women, and women with disabilities. This approach recognizes that diverse perspectives and experiences are valuable in the fight for gender equality and that the movement should reflect the diversity of the population it seeks to serve.

Inclusivity and diversity in modern feminism also mean recognizing that individuals have different privilege levels and oppression based on their identities. Feminists must work to acknowledge and dismantle their own privilege and work in solidarity with those facing more significant challenges.

My take on feminism

I believe modern feminism is a necessary and vital movement that continues to play an integral role in building a fairer and more unbiased society. Women have made significant progress in the fight for gender equality, but there is still a long way to go. Gender inequality persists in various forms, including in the workplace, education, and political representation.

However, some may argue that modern feminism has gone too far, becoming too extreme or divisive. While there are different interpretations and approaches within the feminist movement, I believe these differences are necessary and healthy for the movement to continue growing and evolving.

In conclusion, modern feminism is a movement that recognizes the intersectionality of social identities and works to dismantle the structural barriers that have long oppressed and marginalized women. We should all strive to be allies and advocates for gender equality, working towards a more inclusive and equitable world.
