The Infamous story of ‘Medium Stats’

WHAT WENT WRONG?
❗️ Improvement: ALWAYS Work-in-Progress 👷
Recently I have developed this interest in writing blogs. I am that kind of a person who prefers audio-visual over reading. To be honest, one thing that has changed lately is I have started writing. I am a coder by profession. So I started writing code related posts, and surprisingly I found out people are actually benefiting from the posts. They personally email me and thank me or sometimes ask for more advice or help. This inspired me to continue writing. Also, now I am slowly moving into other general life experience topics as well.
With the habit of writing, I started reading a few blogs everyday. In the last few months, I have come across multiple posts related to the Medium’s stats page.
So what’s wrong? How this is related to the post title?
#ADDICTION.
As soon as I started writing, I am more interested or you can say addicted to knowing about my post reach, the Stats. Medium has a feature, where you can check and compare how your posts are performing. This feature is built to help us understand or gather insights about the posts, and help in improving the content. But I realised, I was just an addict to see the increasing ‘View’ and ‘Clap’ counts.

There are numerous useful features available on the platform to help us improve our content and increase the post reach. But no. I had never used one of the most important features available, I believe, the ‘Edit Story’ option.
It gives me the power to even improve a post which has been published already.
#OUTCOME.
My aim remained very low, as I started being happy with just 10–15 views, out of which only 5–10 reads. Some those claps include 5 of my close friends.
I never took the opportunity to improve my content or writing.
My posts got rejected when I submitted to any publications.
#REFORMATION.
As I started those posts, I realised my mistakes and desperately wanted to change my habit. Even though I haven’t even thought of taking up writing as a profession, but I want to keep it as a hobby but with perfection.
So I started doing the following things:
- Stopped looking ‘Stats’ page. I mostly check the stats page when I am about to write a new story. It helped me understand my scope of improvement.
- The time I used to waste refreshing the stats page n-times, I started looking for new features of the platform. Like I have learned how to add smileys, how to add kicker prior to the title, how to use Text Shots and a lot more other features.
- I started investing my time, understanding my current audience. I don’t want to lose my follower’s count.
- Started posting more often to stay engaged. Even though I mostly publish a new story on weekends, but I try to do that regularly.
#TRANSFORMATION.
After I started following the above-mentioned points, within the next few posts I could see the difference. My readers started engaging with me via ‘Response’ or via Email. Few readers also emailed me with their feedbacks/suggestion. These helped me a lot improving the content. And gradually my post reach started to increase.

The scope for improvement is infinite, precisely because perfection is unattainable. — George Soros
But we can definitely keep on trying to achieve perfection. We will gain a lot of good things on the way.
