How ‘Few-Shot’ Prompts Make AI Your Best Intern
You’ve learned to use modifiers. Now, let’s talk about giving the AI its homework: Context. This is how you show the AI exactly what you want by providing examples, like training a smart intern.
🖼️ Zero-Shot vs. Multi-Shot
This is about how many examples (or “shots”) you give the AI in the prompt itself.
Zero-Shot (No Examples): You just ask the question.
- Prompt: “Write a headline for a new low-cost airline.”
- AI uses: Only its massive general knowledge. (Best for simple, general tasks.)
One-Shot (One Example): You give it one example to copy the style.
- Prompt: “Headline Example 1:
Fly Kingfisher. Get the royal treatment, without the crown price.Now, write a headline for a new low-cost airline.” - AI uses: General knowledge + the format/style from the single example.
Multi-Shot / Few-Shot (A few Examples): You give it several examples.
- Prompt: (Include 3–5 examples of successful Indian low-cost airline slogans). “Now, write a new slogan for a new low-cost airline.”
- Benefit: This is the most effective for complex tasks because it allows the AI to develop a nuanced understanding and provides a greater depth of learning from those few examples.
💬 The ‘Ask Before Answering’ Hack
For critical tasks, tell the AI to check its work or ask a question back before giving the final answer.
- Prompt: “Act as a financial advisor. Before giving a retirement plan, list the 3 assumptions you are making about my risk tolerance and goal date. Ask me to confirm them, and then write the plan.”
This technique ensures the AI’s final response is more targeted and accurate by forcing a self-correction or clarification step.
