Toastmasters: More Than Just Public Speaking

1*hweyfZaTOwzm0TLgViqQgA
First Toastmaster speech is called an Ice Breaker

Have you ever heard of Toastmasters? No, it’s not a group of people who master the art of making perfect toast. Toastmasters is a global nonprofit organization that helps people improve their public speaking, communication, and leadership skills. All the things that make you sound like you have your life together when you’re standing in front of an audience.

Whether you’re someone who gets stage fright just thinking about speaking in front of people or someone who loves holding the mic, Toastmasters has something for everyone. They offer a structured Pathways program, which includes different types of speeches designed to help you build confidence and sharpen your skills.

It starts with the Icebreaker Speech. It’s the “hello world” of public speaking.

My Icebreaker Speech: The Speech I Forgot

Now, let’s talk about my own experience with my first-ever Toastmasters speech. I spent hours crafting it, choosing the right words, structuring it perfectly, and ensuring it reflected my personality. It was gold. I was so proud of what I had written.

And then… I forgot it. On stage. In front of everyone.

Yep, completely blanked out. I could almost hear my brain whispering, You’re on your own, buddy.

For a second, I panicked. But then, somehow, my survival instincts kicked in. I didn’t fumble or freeze. I just kept talking. I had no idea where I was going with my speech, but I improvised.

The funny part? The audience had no clue that half of what I said was made up on the spot, except my mentor, who had read my speech beforehand and was probably mentally screaming.

Improvising > Freezing

This isn’t just about public speaking. This happens in life, too. We prepare, we plan, and then, boom! Things don’t go as expected. Whether it’s a presentation at work, an important conversation, or just a moment where you’re put on the spot, the ability to improvise instead of freezing is what keeps you going.

So, if you ever find yourself in a situation where your mind goes blank, don’t stop. Keep talking, keep moving, and trust yourself.

Sometimes, the best speeches and life’s best moments happen unscripted.

Glimpse from my second Toastmasters meeting — I was the Timer!

Sharing the speech I wrote for you to read!

My speech:

I, Me, and My Pen

Good afternoon, fellow Toastmasters and guests!

I’m here to introduce myself, and what better way to do it than by talking about something that has been a part of me for as long as I can remember? Something that I have loved since eternity — my love for writing.

I’ll start by introducing myself. I am Sneha Pandey, a technical writer by profession and a writer by soul. Beyond my day-to-day job of simplifying complex jargon and making information accessible, I also write on Medium — a space where my thoughts find their voice. I write about life, personal experiences, travel, technology, and a topic especially close to my heart: mental health. Having experienced its challenges firsthand, I understand how important it is to have open conversations about it. Sharing my journey has not only helped me heal but has also allowed me to connect with others who may feel unseen. If my words can make even one person feel less alone, then every moment spent writing is worthwhile.

Coming back to my love. I can’t tell you when exactly I fell in love with writing — it just happened, like finding your favorite food and wondering how you ever lived without it. But if I had to trace it back, I would say it all began in class 4.

That was the first time I presented my writing in public. The topic? “My Best Friend.” Sounds simple, right? But for me, it was serious business. While my classmates wrote one paragraph and ran off to play, I sat there, rewriting, editing, and perfecting every word. I wanted to ensure my best friend sounded like the best friend ever! The irony? She never even read it. I’m still waiting for her review.

That small incident sparked a lifelong passion for writing. Over the years, writing became more than just a hobby — it became my way of processing emotions and understanding the world around me. Whether it was the joy of a new experience or the confusion of a difficult phase, my pen became my closest companion.

Friends started saying, “Hey, you should write for us!” And suddenly, I became the go-to person for writing — from birthday captions to Instagram posts, from essays to love letters (strictly for friends, of course!).

And let’s not forget my siblings. They quickly realized they could outsource their assignments to me. So, while they were out having fun, I was at home writing essays about topics I didn’t even study.

Fast-forward to today, and I have turned that passion into my career as a technical writer. My job is to make complicated things sound simple. It is like explaining a smartphone to your grandparents without losing patience.

But while technical writing follows the rules, my heart still craved freedom. The freedom to write without guidelines, without structured formats, without the fear of “please keep it concise.” That’s when I found Medium, a platform where I could write about anything — life, struggles, growth, and even the thoughts that kept me up at night. It was liberating. And the best part? People read it. Some even related to it. That’s when I realized — words have power.

And now, here I am, taking my love for words from paper to the stage. Speaking is a new challenge for me. I can’t edit or delete, and I definitely can’t ask ChatGPT to make it sound better! But that’s exactly why I’m here. I want to grow, challenge myself, and turn my words into something more than just text on a screen.

So, here’s to new beginnings, storytelling, and stepping out of my comfort zone — one word at a time.

This blog is just the beginning! I’ll be writing a detailed post soon on the what and hows of Toastmasters, so stay tuned.
