10 Must-Watch Movies That Actually Get Mental Health

Discover 10 must-watch movies that portray mental health with honesty and depth, helping to break the stigma!

Banner for the blog: 10 mist watch mental health movies

I have been quite vocal about mental health over the years. The reasons? Honestly, I don’t even know where to begin.

Maybe because I have lived through some heavy stuff myself and know how dark and confusing it can get.

Maybe because I’m still figuring out my own patterns and my vulnerabilities.

Maybe because I have seen people throw around terms like “depression” or “OCD” without knowing the weight they carry.

Or maybe because I have seen how easy it is to joke about someone’s pain just because it’s not visible.

There could be a hundred reasons. But the goal is one: To normalize talking about mental health, even in rooms that treat it like a stigma. And what better way to talk about it than through media, movies, shows, and television!

Movies and Mental Health

While I often write about my own experiences, I recently realized that I’ve watched some incredible films and shows that have portrayed mental health with honesty, emotion, and sometimes pure magic. These aren’t just movies.

These are stories that help you understand what it actually feels like to live with something going on in your head that even you don’t always understand.

Not in a preachy, textbook manner. But in the way that art sometimes does, by hitting you in the gut, making you cry unexpectedly, or helping you say, “Oh… so it’s not just me.”

Here are 10 films that have portrayed mental health in an honest, emotional, and sometimes even beautifully messy way.

They don’t explain, they show. And in doing so, they help us gain a deeper understanding of the world.

🎥1. Dear Zindagi (2016)

Topic: Therapy, emotional trauma, burnout

A film that finally made therapy look normal. It doesn’t dramatize the process — it normalizes it.

Alia Bhatt plays a young woman struggling with emotional baggage, and Shah Rukh Khan (yes, SRK as a therapist!) provides the calm, non-judgmental space we all wish we had.

Where can you watch: Netflix

🎥 2. Taare Zameen Par (2007)

Topic: Dyslexia, childhood mental health

It’s not just a film about learning difficulties; it’s about the importance of being seen.

So many kids are misunderstood and punished for things they can’t control. This movie teaches compassion, especially for those who don’t fit the mold.

Where can you watch: You can download or rent it. Not available on OTT

🎥 3. Barfi! (2012)

Topic: Neurodivergence, non-verbal communication

A story told without needing to shout. It challenges every definition we have of “normal” and leaves you with warmth, questions, and a full heart.

Where can you watch: You can download or rent it. Not available on OTT

🎥 4. Tamasha (2015)

Topic: Identity, societal pressure, internalized trauma

This one? It’s personal.

It’s about losing yourself in the expectations the world throws at you — and then slowly breaking under the weight of pretending. It hit me hard.

Where can you watch: Amazon Prime

📺 5. My Daily Dose of Sunshine (2023)

Topic: Psychiatric care, healing, hospital reality

Based on real-life events from a psychiatric nurse’s experiences, this Korean drama is filled with empathy. It doesn’t sugarcoat the system, but it shows how connection and kindness can change lives.

Where can you watch: Netflix

📺 6. It’s Okay to Not Be Okay (2020)

Topic: Childhood trauma, PTSD, emotional repression

Dark, magical, strange — and yet so real.

Every character carries trauma. And slowly, through chaos and compassion, they teach each other how to live again. It’s raw. And healing.

Where can you watch: Netflix

🎬 7. Inside Out (2015)

Topic: Emotional intelligence, childhood mental health

A children’s movie that every adult needs to see.

It teaches you that sadness isn’t the enemy — and that feeling things deeply isn’t weakness. It’s wisdom.

Where can you watch: Hotstar

🎬 8. Silver Linings Playbook (2012)

Topic: Bipolar disorder, grief, recovery

It’s messy. Awkward. Full of chaos and hope.

And that’s exactly why it’s beautiful. Two flawed people trying to heal on their own terms — it feels real because it is.

Where can you watch: Amazon Prime

🎬 9. Thunderbolts* (2025)

Topic: Trauma, emotional wounds in superheroes

Yes, a Marvel movie on this list.

It shocked me, too. But this one doesn’t just focus on saving the world — it touches on PTSD, emotional damage, and the burden of survival. Mental health in spandex? I’m here for it.

Where can you watch: Released on big screens. Not available on OTT yet.

🎬 10. The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012)

Topic: Depression, trauma, teenage mental health

Soft, honest, heartbreaking.

This movie captures what it’s like to carry pain that you don’t fully understand and how healing sometimes comes from being heard.

Where can you watch: Amazon Prime

It’s Okay If You Don’t Understand Mental Health Yet

But here’s what’s not okay: Dismissing it. Making fun of it. Ignoring it just because you can’t see it.

We’re in 2025. We talk about AI, technology, self-care, and space travel. But mental health? Even today, with all our progress, awareness, and social media campaigns, mental health is still treated like a taboo. It’s either romanticized for sympathy or brushed under the carpet altogether.

People who speak up are often labeled as “attention seekers.”

Those who stay silent? Forgotten.

People only seem to “get it” when someone is visibly falling apart. But what about the ones suffering quietly? The ones who smile through the pain, who don’t post about it, who don’t make noise? And the worst part? You never know who’s hurting because not everyone screams. Some suffer quietly, without ever saying a word. Honestly, I could go on and on about this!

But for now, if you’re someone who struggles to understand mental health (yours or someone else’s), maybe start here. Watch these films. Let them sit with you. Let them make you feel something. Let them shift something in you.

And if you’ve more recommendations, please share them in the comments. Let’s share. Let’s talk.

Because the more we talk about it, the less alone someone might feel. Let these stories be a starting point for vital conversations.
