Why Failure is the Secret to a Successful Life?

Failure is the mess before you deliver the best of your Art in your life!

Failure > Success

We live in a world obsessed with winning. From childhood, we’re taught to aim for the stars, ace exams, and chase success at every turn. Parents cheer for trophies, schools reward top performers, and society celebrates winners. But what about failure? Why does no one teach us how to fail?

The reality is that failure is not only unavoidable but also essential. It is the unsung hero of all success stories, the silent mentor who molds us into strong, flexible, and compassionate people.

Failure matters, and it can light the path to success.

Why We Fear Failure

When was the last time you heard, “It’s okay to fail?” Probably never. We are taught to avoid failing at all costs from an early age. A poor grade feels like the end of the world. Losing a competition feels like a personal defeat. We are so frightened of failure that we hardly try.

My very first job interview during my last year of graduation was disastrous. I paused in the middle of my sentence because I feared I would say something incorrectly. Though the interviewer smiled politely without saying anything, I knew I had made a blunder. I felt like a complete failure as I walked out of the room. Weeks passed before I recovered from the humiliation.

But reflecting back on it, I realized that self-confidence in humans is just as important as preparation!

Why is Failure Necessary?

I remember being angry at my mother for cooking bitter gourd as a child. I hated bitter gourd because of its pungent and acerbic taste. Every time I complained, my grandfather would say, “ You won’t know what tastes good unless you taste something terrible.” That’s the summary of life.

Failure is not the opposite of success; it’s a stepping stone.

Imagine a child learning to walk. They fall countless times before taking their first steady step. But do they stop trying? No. They instinctively know that losing is part of the process. Somewhere along the way, as we grow older, society conditions us to fear failure. We begin associating it with shame instead of seeing it as growth. You won’t understand success unless you have tasted the failure.

Failure Teaches Resilience
We learn to pick ourselves up and try again every time we fail. It’s like building emotional muscle. The more we fail, the stronger we become.

Failure Sparks Creativity
We are forced to think out-of-the-box when things don’t go as planned. A term I never really understood. Your box could be different than mine, so how does my thinking out-of-the-box define success? Many of the greatest inventions, such as the airplane and the lightbulb, resulted from numerous failures. But do we talk about this openly? NO!

Failure Builds Empathy
Failing helps us understand others’ struggles. It makes us kinder, more compassionate, and less judgmental.

How Failure Paves the Path to Success

One of my former managers always said, “Failure isn’t the end — it’s feedback. Every misstep and setback is an opportunity to learn and grow.” And I preach the same to others and in my life. I get disappointed and demotivated, and my self-confidence drops to the lowest, but I get myself straight back. Feeling bad, crying, or sad about failure is okay. However, the next few steps in your life depend on whether you treat failure as a lesson, just another step, or a setback.

The greatest inventor in history, Thomas Alva Edison, made almost 1,000 blunders before he eventually invented the lightbulb. In response to a question about his shortcomings, he said, “I didn’t fail 1,000 times. The lightbulb was an invention of 1000 steps.”

Before Harry Potter became a worldwide phenomenon, renowned novelist J.K. Rowling had twelve publishers reject her work. Her failure didn’t define her; it fueled her determination.

I have now learned that failure is often a redirection. That job interview I bombed? It led me to a better opportunity I hadn’t even considered.

We have all been on the path of failure.

If you’re reading this and thinking, “I’m a loser,” I want you to know you’re not alone. I have been there too!

You grow successful when you taste failure.

But the moment you feel stuck and hopeless as if the whole universe is conspiring against you, always remember that this is your life’s turning point. You just don’t realize it then!

So, the next time you fail, don’t beat yourself up. The next time someone goes all gloomy about their failure, sit with them, talk openly about your failures, and assure them that they are not alone.

Remember, every great success story is built on a foundation of failures.

You’re doing better than you think. Keep going.
