What’s brilliant about Nahoko’s character is how she functions on multiple levels. Narratively, she’s Jiro’s love interest. Symbolically, her illness mirrors Jiro’s own mortality, reminding us that no matter how enduring we intend our creations to be, we ourselves will not endure.
